Oyster Tonging and Crabpot Pulling Contest
These competitions, designed to celebrate the heritage of the area waterman past and present, will be held on Saturday at 2:30 pm on the platform to the left of the stage.  They are contests of skill and strength that give local waterman bragging rights in their community. Some records quickly fall but others last for years bringing respect to the record holder and the tradition for which the contests represent.

Crab Pot Pulling
The crab pot pulling contest is a timed event where contestants compete to see who can pull, empty, and re-bait two crab pots in the least time. Contestants pull the crab pots up onto a raised platform, empty the rubber crabs into a basket, and restock the pot with simulated bait. Trophies are awarded for the first, second, and third fastest times.

Oyster Tonging
The oyster tonging contest is a timed event where contestants compete to see who can tong the most oyster shells. Contestants stand on a raised platform and use oyster tongs to pull oyster shells from a pile below. The winner is determined by who tongs the most weight. This contest is truly one of brut strength and stamina.  Although this method is no longer used by the working watermen it is a treasured tradition.  The competition is made extra difficult because the shells are being lifted without the bouncy of the salt water. Trophies are awarded for the first, second, and third highest weight totals.
